First aid work

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is pressing ahead with plans to remove the approval process for first-aid training organisations. The intention is to formally end the previous system in October 2013, at which point employers will be left to their own devices when selecting training partners.

HSE policy advisor Peter Brown explained that: “Removing the approval process will give businesses greater flexibility to choose their own training providers, and training that is right for their work place, based on their needs assessment and their individual business needs.” Thus the onus will be on the employer, via a first-aid needs assessment, to establish what level of training is appropriate and who should provide it.

HSE have produced two draft guidance leaflets to help and these are available via their website at http://www.hse.gov.uk/firstaid/proposed-changes-firstaid-regulations.htm
