Missing guard led to Kent company shocked by fine finger injury

Norwich Magistrates’ Court handed down a fine and costs of almost £10,000 to Swallowtail Print Ltd, of Drayton Industrial Estate, Norwich after a worker almost severed a finger in a machine that had had the guard taken off.

He opened a compartment at the side of the press so as to make some changes to settings, but slipped and put his hand out. This got caught up in pulleys and drive belts used to operate the printing press. Investigations found that the fixed guard to the moving parts had been removed a month earlier by other workers who were also making adjustments.
